Walking School Bus

Alabama’s 1st daily walk to school program

The smallest Trailblazers are the children at Fairhope West Elementary school who walk to school every day, rain or shine. Under adult supervision, the backpack brigade makes the seven-tenths’ mile trek starting from the designated meeting spot at the Fairhope campus of Coastal Community College.

Students enjoy outdoor recreation and socialization, learn safe walking skills, and arrive at school ready to focus.

Committed volunteers, parents, teachers and sponsors, as well as support from the City of Fairhope, make the Walking School Bus possible. It is the 1st daily Walk-to-School program in Alabama.

Organized walks to school benefit the entire community by reducing traffic congestion and air pollution associated with long car lines, and by teaching children lifelong healthy habits.
