The routes are mapped out, sponsorships are coming in, posters are printed, and the excitement is building for the First Annual “Tour de Foley” bicycle ride! The Trailblazers and the Foley Lions Club will be hosting this event Saturday, October 24, beginning at
Heritage
Park
in
Foley

Alabama
. There will also be a registration supper for riders on Friday, October 23.
The “Tour de Foley” will feature an anticipated crowd of 300 bicyclists riding their choice of 62 or 25 mile routes through rural southeastern

. There will also be a 3 mile fun ride. The longer routes will travel through or near the communities of Summerdale, Robertsdale, Loxley, Rosinton, Elsanor, Elberta, Miflin, and Josephine on rural roads with light traffic. Each ride will have several rest stops and support vehicles providing assistance. The proceeds from the ride will go towards the Trailblazers’ efforts to create safe pathways throughout

The ride committee has already secured over $2000 in sponsorships and is currently seeking additional sponsors. Volunteers will be needed for a variety of duties, everything from rest stop helpers to ‘sag wagon’ drivers. On May 6, 2010, Smart Coast honored Teko Wiseman with its "Giraffe Award" for her work in helping develop bike and walking trails from Fairhope through Daphne and on to the Battleship USS Alabama.
Smart Coast founded this award to acknowledge businesses and individuals who "stuck their necks out" to take a critical stand or make decisions that are beyond the norm and outside the box to create a more sustainable business or community and ultimately a sustainable coastal region.

National Trails Day Event At 5 Rivers

The Gulf Coast Chapter of the Alabama Hiking Trail Society, the LA Hikers, will co-host a celebration of the state’s hiking trails with the 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center in Spanish Fort as part of National Trails Day. The event will be held June 5, 2010, from 9am to 3pm.
The event will be a workshop on hiking and backpacking and will feature lectures on a variety of topics sure to be of interest to hikers of all stripes from beginners to more seasoned walkers. Topics include hiking destinations in Alabama, plant identification, the new Alabama Trail from Fort Morgan to Florence, and Leave No Trace. Hands-on demonstrations will focus on choosing the correct hiking gear, everything from packs to boots and more.

Companion bills filed in the Alabama legislature (SB 258, HB 376) would create an Alabama Trails Commission to foster widespread development and link-up of green and blue-water trails throughout the state. Focused on health, family, economic and tourism incentives, the bills call for the proposed commission to coordinate local needs, goals and leadership in trail design, operation, build-up and maintenance for hiking, biking, running, horseback riding, motorized off-highway vehicles, and water sport.
